Paul César HELLEU (1859-1927) Proust sur son lit de mort (No - Lot 23
Paul César HELLEU (1859-1927) Proust sur son lit de mort (November 19, 1922) Drypoint on laid paper. 33.3 x 54 cm - Sight sheet: 44 x 64 cm Very rare proof from an edition of only a few copies. (A little yellowed, lightly foxed, a few breaks and traces of folds, tears in the lower edge, RESTORATIONS and INFINITE LOSSES IN THE RIGHT EDGE). Provenance: Private collection Helleu was confronted with the death of close contemporaries including Montesquiou in 1921, and Mr. Proust in 1922, who himself had asked Helleu to do his death portrait or "last portrait", Proust's old housekeeper related his request as follows: "Helleu wrote: "It's a strange appointment to make. He wanted to do it because I had done Sargent, Whistler and Montesquiou, and this morning I went to the print shop to print 2 or 3 proofs, none of them for sale. It was beautiful, it should have been molded". He is also quoted as saying, "You don't know where I'm going this afternoon, I'm going to draw Proust's head... it's no fun, what a horrible job". According to Helleu's daughter, Mme Paulette Howard-Johnson, Helleu was the first to go to Proust's house with his copper plate, which he quickly engraved in one go, finding it difficult to be in the presence of the dead man in the funereal atmosphere of the room, bothered by the electric light reflected on the plate. Céleste Albaret recounts that Helleu printed 2 or 3 proofs of this drypoint, one for Marcel's brother Robert Proust and one for herself, before the plate was scratched. Céleste Albaret adds, "I know that the heirs found the damaged copper plate and made a few new prints, which were inevitably less sharp and less good than the first ones". Recent studies suggest that there were two portraits, one the second state of the other. The first, of which only 2 proofs are known (one of which is in Tante Léonie's museum), and a small number of the second state after modification of the features and certain details, of which ours would be one. We would like to thank Madame Anne Imbert, General Secretary of the Friends of Marcel Proust, for the information she kindly provided.
