Presumed portrait of Anne Vallayer-Coster (1744-1818) Rare wooden candy box mounted and lined with 750 thousandths gold, decorated in brown Martin varnish, the borders chiselled with foliage, the lid decorated with a superb round miniature portrait painted on ivory showing a painter halfway up, three-quarters right with her head turned to the left, holding her palette in front of a blue floral vase mounted in gilded bronze, signed lower left Dumont. Good general condition, wood cracks. Paris, 1798-1809. The miniature of the 1780s. Gross weight: 114.9 g H: 3.2 cm - D: 8.5 cm SIGNATURE POSSIBLY RESTORED Related works: - A miniature portrait of Anne Vallayer-Coster by Dumont dated 1804 is in the Cleveland Museum of Art, inv. 1943.639. She also holds a blue flowered vase mounted in gilt bronze. - A large miniature portrait of Anne Vallayer-Coster by Dumont dated 1769 (location unknown) is illustrated in Anne Vallayer-Coster, painter to the Court of Marie-Antoinette, Erik Kahng, 2002, fig 4.
