Chinese porcelain plate. Qianlong, 18th century,... - Lot 39 - Thierry de Maigret
Chinese porcelain plate. Qianlong, 18th century, circa 1740-45. Decorated with the enamels of the Rose Family, in the centre of a crest surmounted by a crest, with an inscription, in a medallion made of ironwork, the wing with gold decoration of a frieze of shells, interspersed staples and palms, small chips, small wear and tear. D: 22.5 cm Provenance: The coat of arms is that of the Potter and Hinson families. The service was probably produced for the family of Dr John Potter, born in Yorkshire in 1674, married and became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1737. Three services were produced with this coat of arms, circa 1745, 1765 and 1790; for a piece with this armorial decoration from the second service, see David Sanctuary Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, London, 1974, p. 617.
