Shoichi HASEGAWA (1929–2023) - Lot 103
Shoichi HASEGAWA (1929–2023) Untitled Mixed media on paper mounted on canvas, signed lower right. 122 x 42.5 cm After training as an artist in Japan, Shoichi Hasegawa held his first solo exhibition in 1957. In 1961, he moved to Paris and studied printmaking at Atelier 17 under Stanley William Hayter, a studio that played an important role in the history of modern printmaking. This training left a lasting mark on his work, even though Hasegawa did not limit himself to printmaking. His work is based on an abstract language composed of signs, traces, and forms reminiscent of writing. He combines color, material, and space with great freedom. Without directly imitating Japanese calligraphy, he retains its rhythm and spirit, which he contrasts with the explorations of Western abstraction. Beginning in the 1960s, Shoichi Hasegawa exhibited regularly in France and abroad. He participated notably in several exhibitions and biennials dedicated to contemporary printmaking and received, in 1968, the first prize for printmaking at the International Exhibition in Como. His work is now held in several public collections, notably at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
