Louis François CASSAS (Azay le Ferron 1756 - Versailles 1827 - Lot 16
Louis François CASSAS (Azay le Ferron 1756 - Versailles 1827) Restored view of the Great Gallery of Palmyra Pen and black ink, gray and brown wash 51 x 73.5 cm Titled at bottom Restored view of the Great Gallery of Palmyra, at the end of which can be seen the temple of Neptune and the four manifest tombs that decorate it. In the background, at the entrance to the valley of tombs, is a hill covered with an infinite number of these monumens, still perfectly preserved - see the general plan Voyage de la Syrie in 1st Vol. pl. 530 (by L. f. Cassas). Bending Provenance: Probably Louis François et Hippolyte Cassas sale, January 14 - 16, 1878, Paris, Hôtel Drouot, (Me Lecocq), no. 164 (Restored view of the Great Gallery of Palmyra, Indian ink wash drawing) In 1784, Louis François Cassas accompanied the new French ambassador to Constantinople, the Comte de Choiseul - Gouffier. He criss-crossed most of the Middle East, Syria, Palestine, Egypt..., bringing back some 250 drawings, which constitute an important record of the region in the 18th century. Some of his drawings were published in the two volumes Voyage pittoresque de la Syrie, de la Phénicie, de la Palestine et de la Basse Aegypte, published in Paris in 1799. The Valley of Tombs, south-west of Palmyra, is famous for its multi-storey funerary towers, monuments without equal in the rest of the Middle East. Galerie Prouté presented a second version of this composition (46.5 x 73 cm) in 1986 (no. 30).
