Diptych in green and silver tinted stripe, probably depictin - Lot 351
Diptych in green and silver tinted stripe, probably depicting the ascent of Baron de Lütgendorf's aerostat on the left, and a handwritten text recounting the scene on the right. 18th century. (Minor damage to the case). H:12 cm Baron Joseph Maximilian von Lütgendorf (1750-1829) was a German inventor who tried, but failed, to become an aviation pioneer. In 1786, after selling 100,000 tickets for the launch of his gas balloon (the "Gondolfiere"), he failed three times to get off the ground. Hated by the public and ruined, he went into exile in England, where he made his fortune before losing everything in a shipwreck and dying in poverty.
