Mediterranean Near East, probably 12th-14th century - Lot 231
Mediterranean Near East, probably 12th-14th century Small bronze or copper basin, engraved with two fleur-de-lys and two inscriptions in Arabic (Accidents, small dents, erosion, holes). MODIFICATION: Engraved decoration of three fleur-de-lys and three inscriptions in Arabic, probably from the Crusades period. D: 11 cm; H: 4.5 cm Provenance: French collection established in the late 19th century The inscription reads: "al-sabr 'ibada" (patience is a form of devotion) This basin probably dates from the Zenguid (1127-1250) or Ayyubid (1171-1250) dynasties, but could also date from the Mamluk dynasty (1250-1517) or slightly later, as the inscription appears on 16th-century Ottoman arms and armor. It may have been brought back from Egypt, Syria or Cyprus in the 19th century. Under the Zengid emirate of Aleppo, a coin dated 1181 in the name of al-Salih Ismail al-Malik was struck with a fleur-de-lys. Under the Mamluks, coats of arms were frequently used, and the fleur-de-lys was one of the emblems used in coats of arms.
