Imperial Guard horse grenadier saber, 3rd model, carried by a guard dragon, presented with its complete equipment: Three-pronged brass hilt with openwork shell, decorated with a flaming grenade in a circle, palmette quillon stamped: "VERSAILLES" partly obliterated, as well as two other punches and, at the end: "J C", three other punches below, oval cut-out cap, leather-covered, watermarked spindle; Montmorency-style blade stamped: "B" (J. B. Bick, controller from 1809) and "M" surmounted by a star (C. Marion, inspector, from December 1808 to June 1811), signed on the back: "Mfture Imple de Klingenthal Coulaux frères" and on one side: "Ligny Versailles 1815 sous Excelmans - Auguste Cruppi 5e dragons - Colonel"; brass scabbard. Colonel"; modified brass scabbard, the two crevices have been replaced by two splints and two riveted rings as on the 2nd type, on each side, the wood covered with leather, two bracelets of bélières, screw-mounted cap for disassembly or cleaning, iron stinger; length 114 cm. (Some dents on the lower part of the cap). It is presented with its white buffalo belt, stitching on the sides and its bélières with its saber attachments, its two-piece brass belt plate, rectangular, canted, adorned in the center with a chased shield of an eagle with spread wings and surmounted by the imperial crown; the guard is equipped with its white buffalo strap, also with double stitching. First Empire period. Very good condition. This type of scabbard modification is common; the scabbards of horse grenadiers' sabers have a weakness in the lateral parts of the crevices, as they are not wide enough to absorb the shock of the saber when it hits the ground, as the inner wood does not reach the end of the scabbard. EXCELMANS commanded the 2nd cavalry corps (dragons), formed by the STROLZ and CHASTEL divisions, under GROUCHY, in the Belgian army, June 5, served at Fleurus on June 15, Ligny on June 16, Wavre on June 18, 1815; withdrew to Paris, took up position at Versailles...(Six).
