Rare saber for a junior officer of the Imperial Guard mounted chasseurs: Chased and gilded brass single-branch hilt; front auricle adorned with a deity's head, possibly Minerva; downward-inflected quillon terminating in a foliate finial. Minerva; downward bent quillon terminating in a foliate finial; long-tailed lion-headed cap, a finial around the rivet; filigreed ebony spindle. Curved rush blade ending in a counter-edge, carp tongue tip, engraved, gilded and blued in thirds, decorated with trophies and foliage and a crowned eagle in an oval medallion on each side; back marked: "Chasseur à cheval de la Garde impériale". Gilded brass scabbard with two bracelets chased with piaster falls and surrounded by spider webs; between the two bracelets, a hexagon bears a crowned eagle in high relief; lower part engraved with a fleuron and foliage; cut iron stinger (worn). Length 103.5 cm. This saber has been around a great deal, and must have been used throughout the Empire. The branch has had a small shock, the scabbard is very worn and has lost most of its gilding; a few knocks on the lower part; the top ring bears an old brass collector's pastille with the number "10". The blade has retained some of its original bluing. First Empire period. Fairly good condition.
