Rare senior officer's saber of the chasseurs à cheval de la - Lot 256
Rare senior officer's saber of the chasseurs à cheval de la garde des Consuls, chased and gilded brass German-style hilt, branch decorated with a full-height foliage stem, crosspiece decorated with vertical striations extending over the two large straight auricles, chased at the ends with the same foliage as on the branch and, in the middle, a fleuron in a circle, straight quillon, German-style skullcap decorated with palmettes around the edge and, on top, with a trophy of arms in a laurel wreath, skullcap tail chased with foliage, the lictor beam in the middle has been replaced by the initials: "B DE LA M", chagrin-covered fuse held in place by two small gilded nails with fleuron-shaped heads; curved damascus blade, undecorated, round back, lateral groove along the back and counter-edge; chagrin-covered wooden scabbard, four chased and gilded double-sided brass fittings, cap decorated with foliage and fluting, the two bracelets with trophies of arms in a laurel wreath, chased bolt with foliage, fluting and, in the middle, a trophy of arms en suite, cut-out iron sting; length 96 cm. Consulate period. Very good condition. This model is very rare, having lost its lictor beam on the cap following a change of regime, its owner was probably ennobled. This model differed from classic hussar officer sabers with German-style guard by the presence of the lictor beam, and all parts are in cast and chased brass, whereas on classic hussar models, the scabbard fittings and caps are in stamped or embossed brass plate. PROVENANCE: former Gilbert PUTTERIE private collection.
