Rare souvenir of a First-Empire marshal: - Lot 176
Rare souvenir of a First-Empire marshal: Triangular, white silk velvet (faded to beige), embroidered on the outer edge and at the bottom with oak leaves loaded with white and a strong serrated baguette, in gold passementerie in thrown stitch of gold covered thread, gold piping and paillons, the oak leaves become more loaded as they descend, until the lower part returns, increasing from 4.5 cm to 14.5 cm, width of the baguette 1.5 cm ; total length 110 cm, width at top 17.5 cm, at bottom 34 cm. (A few stains). First Empire period. Very good condition. The model of these coats can be found on most official paintings: the painting of the Coronation of Napoleon 1st, that of the distribution of the eagles by DAVID, on those depicting full-length portraits of the marshals in full ceremonial dress, including that of marshal VICTOR by GROS in the Musée de Versailles, that of marshal AUGEREAU by THÉVENIN, also in the Musée de Versailles, etc... This ceremonial coat and the marshals' habit were designed by ISABEY for the Rite of Coronation outfits (watercolor, Paris, Musée du Louvre, department of graphic arts); they were probably made by the firm of Auguste PICOT, embroiderer to the First Consul and then the Emperor. Other known pieces: - The two reverses of Maréchal d'Empire OUDINOT, in 1809, Duc de Reggio in 1810, sold in Paris at Hôtel Drouot, PIASA, December 4, 2006, no. 104. - L'habit et le manteau du maréchal NEY, sold in Paris at Hôtel Drouot, étude BINOCHE et GIQUELLO, June 20, 2012, no. 7; unsold and later purchased by the Musée de l'Armée at Les Invalides.
