Maurice RAVEL (1875-1937). L.A.S., [Châlonssur- - Lot 33
Maurice RAVEL (1875-1937). L.A.S., [Châlonssur- Marne] October 9, 1916, to Mme Fernand Dreyfus; 3 1/2 pages in-8°, envelope with stamp of Hôpital temporaire N° 20 de Châlons s/ Marne and autograph countersignature. To his wartime godmother, while hospitalized and treated for dysentery. "It's not the military music, but a lot of quotations that prevented me from writing to you yesterday to thank you. He had received the fruit pastes and "Grotos", which he shared with his ward mates, in "a general bombance"... He should be able to eat just about anything: "But I think it's safer to stick to jams and compotes. So far, I haven't experienced any discomfort from opium, other than... that for which it is intended; not even those headaches that most people experience, it seems. Besides, they're taking it away from me today". He thinks of his godmother's children, who are at the front: "How everything makes you think of them, of their misery! The rain, the sun, the feeling of being well sheltered, in bed, cared for, everything takes you back there, to that hellish life"... Finally, he asked Madame Dreyfus to find out about editions of the Comtesse de Boigne's memoirs. Boigne, fragments of which he had read "and which are of fascinating interest"...
