Bust of a man in limestone France, Renaissance, 16th century - Lot 147
Bust of a man in limestone France, Renaissance, 16th century H: 34.5 cm - D: 15 cm Bust carved in limestone from the Tonnerre area (Burgundy), depicting a man in the prime of life, leaning slightly to his right, arms crossed over his chest. His face is expressive, framed by fine, wavy hair. A straight nose, a small, fleshy mouth framed by a moustache and a short, neat beard, and almond-shaped eyes with marked irises that give a piercing gaze that seems to stare intently at a point. This grave, almost meditative expression suggests an attitude of reflection or contemplation. He is dressed in a fine tunic, pinched at the collar by a clasp, which folds over his chest and forearms in delicate drapery, giving our work the elegance and realism of 16th-century works. The drapery of the tunic at the bottom suggests that our protagonist is shown seated. Its twisting movement probably indicates its original dialogue with another sculpture, once displayed opposite it.
