Virgin and Child in Majesty "Sedes Sapientiae" in high-relie - Lot 134
Virgin and Child in Majesty "Sedes Sapientiae" in high-relief carved wood with remnants of early polychromy Probably from southwestern or southern France, second half of 14th century (Traces of woodworm, visible missing parts) H: 61 cm Mary sits on the throne of God, and is herself the living throne of Christ. Mary is depicted young, majestic, with a beautiful, serene face expressing great gentleness, framed by long locks of artistically twisted hair. Dressed in a long cloak held in place by a clasp simulating a precious jewel, and a long, skilfully pleated gown with vertical folds and a few "duckbill" pleats, she holds the Child in her long left hand at the center of her knees. He is dressed in a long tunic. Although the hands are missing, the posture suggests that he was making a gesture of blessing, probably with his right hand raised. The little arm is missing, as are the right shoulder and Madonna's arm.
