From 1866, the Longwy factory was run by Fernand and Hipollyte d'Huart. Under their impetus, it underwent numerous transformations and major technical advances, including the start of the production of the famous enamel pieces. It was also during this period that the greatest services were created around numerous themes: Egyptian, Pompadour, Japanese, Primrose, Kioto and Chinese. The objects brought back to Europe from the sack of the Summer Palace in Peking in 1860, whose iconography was to be widely disseminated, were to influence Longwy's production in particular; the rather revealing title of this service, and especially the figurations of "fantastic" animals, could be seen as a perfect illustration of this movement.
