This service is considered one of the earliest interpretations of the Japanese style in France. The decoration was created by Félix Bracquemont after engravings by Hokusai, which he had discovered in 1856. The original service was exhibited to great acclaim at the Paris Exhibitions in 1867, 1878 and 1889, as well as in London in 1871 and Vienna in 1873. The designs were so successful that production continued well into the 20th century.
