"Régnier mug and saucer in Sèvres porcelain from the first h - Lot 62
"Régnier mug and saucer in Sèvres porcelain from the first half of the 19th century. Debossed marks, stamped in blue with two interlaced Ls with fleur-de-lys, Sèvres and possibly 21 for 1821, gilder's marks A 26 for Auguste Richard and 1826. The handle with a mascaron and a palmette, polychrome decoration of a large frieze of flowers between a gold braid of an ivy garland and a frieze of palmettes and stylized interspersed flowers, handle restored, small scratches, small enamel chips. saucer diameter: 16 cm Provenance: perhaps from the delivery of December 9, 1828, made by order of "M Le Vicomte de La Rochefoucauld, Aide de Camp du Roi, Chargé du Département des beaux Arts, A M Bergeron d'Anguy (?), Membre du Comité du Contentieux de la Liste civile" [Vbb7, fol. 54] which included "1 Tasse de f[orme] Regnier, Guirlande de fleurs". Notes: Edouard-François Bergeron d'Anguy (or Danguy) (1796-1876): was employed at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1818 to 1821, Conseiller référendaire at the Cour des Comptes from 1822 to 1832 and municipal councillor of Lamotte-Beuvron from 1829 to 1842. The mark printed under the reign of Louis XVIII with the date is unfortunately difficult to read correctly. However, we are certainly dealing with a piece produced under Louis XVIII and decorated during the reign of Charles X. Research carried out in the archives of the Manufacture nationale de Sèvres confirms that the decoration on this piece was carried out in 1826: - the gilder's mark A 26 is listed by Bernard Chevalier in Les Sèvres de Fontainebleau, Niort, 1996, as being that of the gilder Auguste Richard; he mentions eight pieces, described under nos. 53, 55, 61, 80 and 180, bearing this same mark, each time with two digits consistent with the year of entry into the sales store; - in the Register of pieces entered in the sales store (Vv1, fol. 258-32), 4 Régnier cups are mentioned; the appraisal sheets (Pb6, sheet 63 dated 1826) give a more precise description: 4 Régnier cups and saucers, plain, frieze of gold culot and doubled wreath of flowers. The work of these two artists can also be found in the Journal des travaux des peintres et doreurs (Vj'33, folio 121 for Richard and folio 266 for Fontaine). Fontaine was a "florist" at the factory from 1825 onwards, and was initially mentioned as part of the "travaux extraordinaires", but was eventually integrated into the staff from 1830 to 1857. As for the addressee, it has not been possible to identify him with any certainty, although we do find this probable mention in the Register of gifts and credit sales (Vbb7, fol.54): "Delivered by order of M Le Vicomte de La Rochefoucauld Aide de Camp du Roi , Chargé du Département des beaux Arts A M Bergeron d'Anguy (?), Membre du Comité du Contentieux de la Liste civile December 9, 1828 1 Regnier f(orme) cup, 45 f(rancs) garland of flowers, twenty of which were taken to complete the 1826 present - 25 (francs) remaining". A very similar but later model, with a white interior rather than the gilded one of "our" example, and with a restored handle, was sold by Me Pescheteau on June 13, 2023, lot 211 (€4,500 excluding costs).
