* Tribunat member's sword, chased and gilded brass hilt, bod - Lot 332
* Tribunat member's sword, chased and gilded brass hilt, body knot decorated with the eye of vigilance, crossed with two quillons ending in ram heads, openwork keyboard representing the tables of the law resting on a lictor bundle and two crossed swords, around a palm leaf and a laurel branch, counter-keyboard decorated with two flowering cornucopias, pommel decorated on both sides with a helmeted woman's head surmounted by an owl representing vigilance, fluted ebony spindle; blued and gilded one-third; leather scabbard with two gilded brass fittings; length 92 cm. Consulate, early First Empire period, 1800/1807. Good condition. This member of the Tribunat was probably a Freemason, which justifies the flamboyant blade. The Tribunat was one of the four assemblies, along with the Conseil d'Etat, the Corps législatif and the Sénat conservateur. Established under the Consulate by the Constitution of An VII, it was officially installed on 11 Nivôse An VIII (January 1, 1800). The Tribunat took over some of the functions of the Conseil des Cinq cents, and its role was to deliberate on bills before they were passed by the Corps législatif, with the initiative for legislation resting solely with the government, i.e. the Premier-Consul (then the Emperor). Its seat was in the Palais royal; it was abolished in 1807. The Tribunate initially comprised 100 members, but was reduced to 50 by the Constitution of August 4, 1802.
