Tapestry entitled "The Chinese Gardener" from the Second Chi - Lot 366
Tapestry entitled "The Chinese Gardener" from the Second Chinese Hanging, after François Boucher, oil on canvas from 1742 and carton or grand patron by Jean-Joseph Dumons, Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, workshop of Jean-François Picon, 18th century, circa 1745-1760. Wool and silk, good condition, wear restorations, reduced and surrounded by a small braid. H: 226 - W: 297 cm This tapestry "The Chinese Gardener" is part of the hanging whose other elements are: La Volière, La Pêche au filet, la Pêche en barque, La Bergère and the two inter-windows Femme près d'une cage à oiseaux and Femme actionnant un moulin. This is a variant of the Chinese wall hanging woven by Picon in Aubusson, perfectly illustrating an imaginary Orient whose success had not waned since the first Chinese wall hanging woven at the Beauvais factory after Vernansal, Monnoyer and Blin de Fontenay. In 1742, François Boucher was asked to create a second Chinese wall hanging, some for the Beauvais factory and others for Aubusson, woven by the workshops of Picon and Pierre Mage from 1756 onwards. As a reminder, the Aubusson Royal Manufactory was made up of private workshops under royal control. A similar tapestry with a cabochon border is in the collections of the Bayerisches Museum (inv. 59/294-296 - former Heinrich Meyer collection). Provenance: former Martin Le Roy collection by descent.
