AUSTRIAN SCHOOL circa 1800, after a model attributed to Leon - Lot 208
AUSTRIAN SCHOOL circa 1800, after a model attributed to Leone LEONI (1509-1590) Emperor Charles V (1500-1558) Petite nature" bust in bronze with brown and gold patinas. Titled CARL V on the front. Total height: 32 cm On a yellow Sienna marble base This bronze bust of Emperor Charles V is a "petite nature" version of an original portrait belonging to Prince de Metternich of Austria. The latter gave a copy to the Hôtel de Ville de Bruxelles as a souvenir of his visit after being ousted from power during the 1848 revolution (inv. B.1853.1). As mentioned by the Museum of Liverpool, which holds a similar version, and although the original bust is not documented, stylistic similarities with other portraits of Charles V by Leone Leoni (1509-1590) suggest that our bust may have been inspired by the portraits and medals of this Italian Renaissance artist.
