The Entombment - Lot 198
The Entombment
A limestone bas-relief of frontal composition, it features eight identifiable figures and two probably mutilated figures, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicomedes. Christ rests on a shroud ready to be placed in the sarcophagus, which is decorated with an openwork frieze of quatrefoils set in lozenges, a typical flamboyant Gothic motif. Two men, perhaps St. John
John holding a book in his hands, another appears to be holding a phylactery. The faces are chubby, with large almond-shaped eyes, high foreheads and well-defined, smiling mouths that contrast with the seriousness of the scene.
French work, Picardie-Champagne, second half of the 15th century (visible cracks).
