Saint overcoming the devil - Lot 192
Saint overcoming the devil Sainte Marthe or Sainte Marguerite in alabaster with a beautiful ivory patina. Here, the saint is depicted as a young woman standing, draped in an ample cloak that falls in soft, V-shaped folds. Her covered head, slightly tilted to the left, is framed by long, curly locks of hair falling to her shoulders. His left hand holds an open book - symbolizing the divine word - his right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing, and his feet are treading on a demon with a grotesque physiognomy. "Victory of Victory of Good over Evil", the face is extremely gentle: fine features, downcast gaze, delicately polished modeling, typical of 17th-century productions. The ample drapery, animated by light counter-plains, reflects a classical influence, heralding the Baroque taste. Southern France, 17th century (small chips). Height: 47 cm
