CHINA - KANGXI period (1662-1722) - Lot 329
CHINA - KANGXI period (1662-1722) Eight-leaf Coromandel lacquer screen decorated on one side with a mandarin in his palace, dancers in front of him, receiving dignitaries passing over a bridge to the lower right, a Fen Yang flag hoisted over the portal. The border is decorated with flowering vases and flowers. The upper part decorated with lacustrine landscapes. The reverse is engraved with a congratulatory text, detailing that a scholar from southern China was celebrating his birthday. His uncle, brother and nephew, as well as his students, joined forces to give him this folding screen as a birthday present. This man took great care of his elderly and ailing parents, as well as his mentally ill mother-in-law. He also looked after his neighbors and friends, for whom he was deeply grateful. The author of this congratulatory text is Liao Tengkui, a renowned high-ranking official of the Kangxi era. Due to missing parts and restorations, it is impossible to identify the name of the scholar whose birthday was celebrated. The inscription dates from the autumn of the 51st year of Kangxi's reign (1712). It is flanked on either side by a dragon in the clouds above a seated lion (damage and restoration). H. 214 cm - L of a leaf : 44 cm
