OHR George Edgar (1857-1918) - Lot 268
OHR George Edgar (1857-1918) Thin-walled ceramic vase with folded rim and shaded green glaze. Signed "G.E. OHR, Biloxi, Miss. Height 8.5 cm Historical background: A daring visionary, George Edgar Ohr (1857-1918), nicknamed "the mad potter of Biloxi", pushed back the boundaries of traditional ceramics between 1880 and 1910. His astonishingly modern creations foreshadowed American Abstract Expressionism in many respects. George Edgar Ohr drew most of his clay from the lands south of the Mississippi, on the banks of the Tchoutacabouffa River. Tchoutacabouffa, whose name, borrowed from the language of the Biloxi tribe, poetically means "broken pot".
