Walter GAY (1856-1937) - Lot 255
Walter GAY (1856-1937) Fontainebleau, view of a pavilion. Oil on panel, signed lower right. 55 x 38 cm Walter Gay, an American painter based in France, established himself as a painter of the refined interiors and grand historic residences he frequented in France. In addition to his famous apartment scenes, he also painted architectural views, notably of Fontainebleau, where he loved to capture the atmosphere of the châteaux and their courtyards. A close friend of Jacques-Émile Blanche and the Parisian artistic milieu, he translated the nobility of the stones and the poetry of the setting with a free, nuanced touch. This painting perfectly illustrates this facet of his work, where architectural rigor and pictorial sensibility come together.
