LÊ THI LU'U (1911-1988) - Lot 208
LÊ THI LU'U (1911-1988) Two children in the garden. Painting on silk marouflaged on paper, signed lower left. 36.5 x 27 cm Lê Thị Lựu is a pioneer in the history of modern Vietnamese painting. The first woman to graduate from the Hanoi School of Fine Arts, she was taught there by Victor Tardieu (1870-1937) and Joseph Inguimberty (1896-1971). It was here that she made friends with those who would leave their mark on the twentieth century: Lê Phổ, Mai Trung Thu, Vũ Cao Đàm, Lê Văn Đệ, Nguyễn Phan Chánh, Tô Ngọc Vân and Nguyễn Gia Trí. She arrived in Paris in June 1940 with her husband, but soon moved to Nice to meet up with her friends Lê Phổ and Mai Trung Thu. The family lived there for two years, before her husband was appointed director of the botanical garden in Kindia, Guinea. Guinea. Returning to France in 1945, she settled for a while in Vanves with Mai Trung Thu, Vũ Cao Đàm's neighbor, then in 1948 in Paris and, in 1953, in Gentilly. It wasn't until 1971 that she left the Paris region to settle in Spéracèdes, Provence. Her work, marked by gentleness and interiority, favors portraits of children maternal scenes and familiar atmospheres. Through a subtle palette, graceful faces and a supple touch, she expresses a vision of childhood and femininity. The painting presented, Two Children in the Garden, fully illustrates this this sensibility. In a profusion of colorful flowers, two young girls appear one smiling in the foreground, the other more dreamy in the background. The freshness of the attitudes, the tenderness of the faces and the luminous palette reflect the artist's characteristic grace, combining Vietnamese heritage Vietnamese heritage and French refinement.
