Very interesting petit point tapestry featuring in the cente - Lot 268
Very interesting petit point tapestry featuring in the center the coat of arms of Charles Emmanuel I de Gorrevod (1569-1625) surrounded by the collar of the Order of the Golden Fleece on a brown background, and a border of small naturalistic compartments.
Attributed to workshops in the Netherlands, early 17th century (good condition but wear and tear, and light-colored outer border rewoven in the 19th century, lined with an old linen canvas on a stretcher).
H : 208 - W : 158 cm
This illustrious gentleman from the Franche-Comté region had a brilliant career at the head of numerous fiefs, was a statesman in the Habsburg Netherlands and was made a Knight of the Golden Fleece in 1613, created in 1430 by Philip the Good in Bruges.
Bon in Bruges. This tapestry was probably commissioned for this occasion, and it seems likely that it was made in the Netherlands, or that the border was embroidered in England and then re-stripped, since these typical 17th-century motifs were widely used, as can be seen at the Musée National de la Renaissance.
