"The Resurrection - Lot 137
"The Resurrection
Carved limestone bas-relief. Christ is depicted in all his glory, his head encircled by a radiant nimbus rising into the sky like the sun rising over the horizon. His beard _x001e_ne and brow high, he looks out at the viewer, whom he seems to be blessing with his right hand.
His body is half-covered by a heavy cloak, revealing his torso and illustrating the carnal reality and vitality of the Risen One's body. The signs of the Passion, the trace of the spear on his _x001f_an, and that of the nail on his left foot, are still visible. Christ appears relaxed. He stands imposingly at the center of the panel. He dominates the viewer and the armored soldiers. He carries a cross, symbolizing his victory over death. He steps in front of the viewer... The four soldiers guarding the tomb are either in shock or half-asleep. There is a lovely pediment decorated with a female mascaron and a frieze of plant motifs...
France, 16th/17th century (restoration, gluing, wear, embossing...).
