The catalog of the Delestre Gallery Exhibition states of this group: Le Triomphe de Silène had been started by Dalou in England, on his return to Belgium in 1879. Amazed by Flemish painting, particularly that of Rubens and Jordaens, he subsequently drew inspiration from their subjects: a procession of Silenus, various Bacchanals and mythological scenes. It was completed in 1884 and exhibited in plaster at the 1885 Salon. Purchased by the State on March 21, 1894 and cast in bronze by the Thiebault firm, it has been installed in the Luxembourg gardens since 1898.
