Tapestry "Le passage du Granique", one of the episodes of th - Lot 316
Tapestry "Le passage du Granique", one of the episodes of the History of Alexander hanging, after a design by Charles Le Brun, surmounted by the coat of arms, not legible but possibly the Count of Brühl, bearing the mark MR.DAUBUSSON.A.GRELLET, Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, workshop of Antoine Grellet, circa 1680, late 17th century. H. 2.84 m - L. 6.40 m Considered one of Charles Le Brun's major works, the Histoire d'Alexandre was woven by the Gobelins (preserved at Mobilier national GMTT81/2), the Flemish workshops in Brussels and Aubusson, as seen here. This scene depicts the battle of the Macedonians led by Alexander the Great against the Persians on the banks of the Granique river in Asia Minor in 334 BC. Charles Le Brun (1619-1690) is the author of this drawing, kept in the Graphic Arts Department of the Musée du Louvre (inv.29621), which was reproduced by the engravers Girard Audran (1640-1703) and Gérard Edelinck. Gérard Edelinck, whose etchings are kept at the Bibliothèque nationale de France (Res AA6 Audran). The Royal Aubusson Manufactory was made up of a myriad of state-controlled private workshops, including the Grellet dynasty, which sold its tapestries in Paris on rue de la Huchette. A tapestry woven in Felletin by Pierre Vergne's workshop, circa 1680, has a different format. The Royal Wawel Castle in Krakow also preserves a tapestry depicting "Le passage du Granique" in a slightly different execution. The History of Alexander tapestry.
