Jean - Léon GERÔME (Vesoul 1824-Paris 1904) - Lot 54
Jean - Léon GERÔME (Vesoul 1824-Paris 1904) Study for Cleopatra Black pencil on beige paper. 32.5 x 21 cm Signed lower right JL Gérôme. Our drawing is a study of Cleopatra, for Jean - Léon Gérôme's painting Gérôme, Cléopâtre et César, belonging to a private collection (see G. M. Ackerman, Jean-Léon Gérôme, Paris, 2000, no. 159, reproduced). The picture was painted in 1866, apparently on the suggestion of Prosper Mérimée. It was intended for M. de Paiva, who considered it too expensive. Several studies and sketches exist, attesting to variations in the composition, particularly as regards the figures. The decor is that of the Deir el Medinah Temple.
