Large rectangular stele in soft stone, with carved decoratio - Lot 146
Large rectangular stele in soft stone, with carved decoration in high relief, decorated with six lines of text in floriated kufic script within a poly-lobed cartouche frame, with spandrels also inscribed in kufic script.
Probably Iran, 10th-12th century or later. (Heavy wear, chips, lower part missing).
H: 55 - W: 36 - D: 8 cm
The Arabic inscription reads: (The order to restore this blessed mosque was given by Sultan al-ajam Sharaf al-Dounya wa'l-Din
Muhammad ibn Arsalan al-...)
Sharaf al-Din Muhammad b. Arslan does not appear to be listed as a ruler, and such a title is not usual for a sultan, and would be more reminiscent of a cleric. The floriated kufic script is reminiscent of medieval production in Eastern Iran or Afghanistan, but given the elements of the inscription, it is difficult to date and situate this stele more precisely.
