NEVERS Exceptional and important earthenware dish with full polychrome decoration depicting the first ages of man and the flood, richly decorated with exotic animals, centaurs, angels, birds, satyrs... Mark on reverse Jacque Conrade. 17th century, circa 1640-1650. D : 52 cm Sale collection X, Nov 21, 1936, unlocated Reproduced in Damiron in 1926 under number 86, pl 19. and in Quirielle et Damiron number 103, pl 23 and reproduced in black and white in Jean Rosen's LA Faïence de Nevers, Tome 2. This exceptional, seemingly lost piece, made by the Conrades in Nevers, is highly characteristic of French majolica a historiato, which has detached itself from Italian influence. Pieces bearing the Conrade mark are very rare in blue monochrome and even rarer in polychrome.
