Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898). - Lot 33
Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898).
L.A.S., Pont-Aven May 28, 1897, to his brother Louis; 3 pages in-8°.
Visit to the Vendée and Brittany. He writes to him from "the depths of Brittany", from Pont-Aven, and so far the weather hasn't made their trip any easier: after a few days of fine weather, it's been nothing but gusts, wind and rain...
They visited "the beaches of the country, passing through Nantes and St-Nazaire, which are rather insignificant on the picturesque side, and which made me miss our Le Havre. As for the other beaches, the islands etc. like Belle-Île, Quiberon, Le
Croisic [...] they're not as good as our Normandy coasts, despite what visitors say and the rough granite bark on the ground"... They then thought of going to Concarneau, "but how tiring it all is, especially when you have to drag heavy luggage [...] we can't take it anymore, and I don't think we'll be able to bring back enough to pay our expenses". His lumbago makes him suffer horribly, and the wet weather doesn't help. "At last we're making a sort of stopover here, as we're two leagues from the sea, although the little port here contains a number of coasters"... His wife Juliette sends them her regards and "she shares my devotion, for it takes some to go and discover the new picturesque too - Oh travels, what a chore my children!...".
