Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898). - Lot 23
Eugène BOUDIN (1824-1898). L.A.S., Paris January 22, 1857, to M. Mangin; 2 pages in-8°. He finally sends him "the two wooden panels so often promised. I hope you will not be deceived as to the quality. The marine, which is my last study of the season, may seem simple to you - it's a beach at Ste Adresse on a slightly cloudy day. But you can see that on this beach, there's little more than a small boat, horses hauling pebbles or clay, nothing at all. For the landscape, I would have liked to choose a stronger, more colorful canvas, but I only had that in large dimensions. I had to stick to this little willow grove, in which the effect is too diffuse, too weak - you'll be indulgent"... However, if it didn't suit him, he would gladly exchange it... "If, by chance, there should happen to be among your acquaintances some amateurs who would like to try out a few small seascapes, I have some very simple studies that I would be happy to finish. - These are the only essays I wish to produce in Paris, where few painters do this genre - for landscapes I would bring nothing strong enough to succeed among so many skilled painters. I recently sent eight marine natures to Paris, but I put them in such poor hands that I believe they are very compromised for success"...
