Roel D'HAESE (1921-1996) - Lot 103
Roel D'HAESE (1921-1996) Joan of Arc, 1968 Black pencil and stump drawing, signed, dated 16-7-68 and titled lower right. 50 x 65 cm Roel D'Haese was a Belgian sculptor whose work is distinguished by a style that is both poetic and raw. Born in Aalst, Belgium, he trained at the Brussels Academy of Fine Arts. His approach to sculpture is marked by a constant search for new expressions, often influenced by surrealism, but also by the absurd and the dreamlike. D'Haese has worked mainly with materials such as bronze, cement and sometimes iron, seeking to give life to forms that are both organic and geometric. The work we present here, Souvenir de Pékin, is a gold sculpture that evokes the memory of a distant, perhaps imaginary journey or impression. This sculpture stands out for its precious material, rare in its corpus, and testifies to the artist's particular sensitivity to foreign memories and cultural experiences. His works, often marked by a delicate abstraction, evoke characters or creatures that seem out of time, even out of dreams. Throughout his career, Roel D'Haese has taken part in numerous Exhibitions throughout Europe and has been recognized for his originality. His sculptures can be found in many public and private collections. He has established a singular signature in modern Belgian art, while remaining modest in his approach to art and life.
