Michel DECOUX (1837-1924) - Lot 142
Michel DECOUX (1837-1924) Allegory of Abundance: Ceres crowned by a putto seated on a cornucopia Terra cotta group. Signed MEL DECOUX. F. 1866 on the edge of the terrace. (Minor accidents and chips). H : 30 cm A sculptor from Liège, Michel Decoux took part in a major commission to create statues for the Palais Provincial in Liège, rebuilt between 1849 and 1853 in the neo-Gothic style. He executed three of the forty-two statues. This charming little allegorical group in terracotta is in keeping with the classicizing style of the first part of his career. At the beginning of the 20th century, Michel Decoux turned radically to animal sculpture, influenced by cubism and the Art décor movement.
