Jean-Baptiste PILLEMENT (Lyon 1728-1808) - Lot 115
Jean-Baptiste PILLEMENT (Lyon 1728-1808) Fishermen near a waterfall Canvas. 67 x 96 cm Signed and dated lower left JB Pillement / 1783. Born in Lyon, Jean-Baptiste Pillement moved to Paris, where he became a court painter, attracting attention for his refined style and graceful compositions. He then traveled throughout Europe, working for royal courts and aristocratic houses in Austria, England and Spain. He became famous for his murals and illustrations, which influenced the interior decoration and decorative arts of his time, particularly textiles and porcelain. Our painting dates from his Portuguese period, which had a profound influence on his art. Arriving in Lisbon in 1780, he was invited to work for the Portuguese royal court and was commissioned to decorate numerous palaces. His works are characterized by chinoiserie motifs, bucolic scenes and seascapes, with blue playing an increasingly important role in his palette. He returned to France in 1789.
