* Rare sword, shakudo guard for export, black burnished back - Lot 415
* Rare sword, shakudo guard for export, black burnished background, decorated with gold-plated foliage, scrolls, flowers and shells, two-shell double-sided plate, European pattern, the branch, donkey steps and quillon have been removed or broken; triangular-section blade, engraved in thirds without marking, possibly from the Netherlands; length 98.5 cm (Without scabbard). Japan or China, circa 1760. Good condition. Interesting model probably made in Japan or China for export to the Netherlands (Compagnie des Indes trading post); the particularity of this guard is that the decorations are not gilded with mercury, but applied with gold leaf in relief. PROVENANCE: former R. VAN OEVEREN COLLECTION.
