Antoine Roux (1765/1835) Watercolor drawing, Portrait of boats, marked on the lower part in a brown watercolor cartouche, in white letters: "Brick le Cygne Capne Ytier 1814", signed lower left: "Antne Roux a Marseille 1814"; it shows a fourteen-gun brig, near a coast, leaving a harbor, on the right, a citadel with two towers, and surrounded by three other small boats; gilded frame; 44 x 60 cm. (Small stains and freckles). Late First Empire, Restoration period. Good condition. Ange Joseph Antoine ROUX, born and died in Marseille (1765/1835). Hydrographer, watercolorist and marine draftsman; son of Joseph ROUX and Rose Élisabeth CATELIN; he produced several reconstructions of naval battles, as well as ex-votos requested by sailors who had survived shipwrecks. He settled down in 1790 and created a new genre: "Portrait de bateaux". He was an immediate success, with shipowners, captains and sailors commissioning reproductions of their ships, most often depicted near the port of Marseille.
