Exhibition: Prix de Rome competition, 1775.
After spending part of his childhood in America, Jean-Baptiste Régnault returned to Paris, where he became a pupil of Nicolas-Bernard Lépicié, Joseph-Marie Vien and Jean Bardin. With the latter, he left for Rome to continue his training. With this painting, he took second place in the Prix de Rome of 1775, the first prize being won by Jean Bonvoisin with the painting now conserved at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Régnault won the Grand Prix the following year with Alexandre et Diogène. He stayed at the Académie de France in Rome with Jacques-Louis David and Pierre Peyron. He was admitted to the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture in 1783, and exhibited his reception piece
L'Éducation d'Achille par le centaure Chiron in the Louvre.
