CHINE, Qianlong, XVIIIe siècle - Lot 272
CHINE, Qianlong, XVIIIe siècle Pair of porcelain armorial covered pots. Cylindrical in shape, with gold decoration of a double-headed eagle in gold four-lobed reserves surrounded by flowers in Famille Rose enamels, one bowl and one lid. H: 17.5 cm - D: 16.5 cm (Cracks and small chips, chips on the heels, minor wear). Provenance: Former collections of the Duc d'Albufera, Château de Bizy, and by descent to the present owners. Notes: For another similar model, see Nuno de Castro, Chinese porcelain at the time of the Empire, Portugal / Brasil, Lisbon, 2007, p.356; and its sale at Mes Cabral-Moncada-Leiloes, Lisbon, December 11, 2023, lot 81. In his publication, Nuno de Castro describes this double-headed eagle as possibly having been used for a convent in Goa or Macau; the double-headed eagle is also found on numerous other pieces attributed to the Order of Saint Augustin (op. cit., pp.351-355); this order was known in Macau as early as 1589, with the creation of the convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça. For further comments on religious heraldry, see the article by Maria Helena Mendes Pinto, 'Panorama Historico e Artistico', in the exhibition catalog De Goa a Lisboa Lisboa: a arte indo portuguesa dos séculos XVI a XVIII, Lisbon, 1992
