Cup with central "Ahmad" inscription - Lot 27
Cup with central "Ahmad" inscription Eastern Iran, Nichapur, 10th century Bowl with flared sides on a small annular base. Clay ceramic with brown slip decoration on a beige background, decorated with an epigraphic frieze in Kufic on the wall and the word "Ahmad" in the center of the bowl. Old number n° 4 inscribed in pencil. (Restorations, fractures visible on the reverse, one missing piece restored and repainted). D: 21.5 cm - H: 7 cm This bowl belongs to a group of large Khorassan bowls featuring the same kufic decoration with curved stems, radiating around the word "Ahmad". The significance of this word on many of the bowls has often been debated. It would appear that it is not a first name, but rather a blessing used in Nichapour. A similar large bowl is preserved in the Sarikhani collection (inv. I.CE. 2072) (Oliver Watson, Ceramics of Iran. Islamic Pottery form the Sarikhani Collection, Yale University Press, 2020, cat. 23, p. 71)
