Tapestry "Les adieux d'Enée à la reine Didon" from the "Femm - Lot 306
Tapestry "Les adieux d'Enée à la reine Didon" from the "Femmes Illustres de l'Antiquité" hanging, attributed to Isaac Moillon, Manufacture Royale d'Aubusson, 2nd half of the 17th century.
H. 3.31 m - W. 4.73 m
This rarely-treated subject is taken from the Aeneid, IV, 283- 288, and illustrates Aeneas leaving Dido's grieving queen, accompanied by his sister Anna. The drawing is attributed to Isaac Moillon (1614-1673), who was himself probably inspired by a drawing by Sébastien Bourdon from 1637-1640, which bears many similarities.
A similar tapestry with a different border is in the Château d'Ansouis (Vaucluse). (Wool and silk, good overall condition, but old restorations are to be noted, particularly at the bottom, and an added piece at top left under the inner brown border, probably reduced in height, lining with rings).
S. Laveissière. N. de Reyniès. Isaac Moillon (1614-1673) Somogy 2005.p.284-285.
