Jean-Baptiste Girard (born and died in Dole in 1733) was at the center of a scandalous affair of morals that turned out to be a struggle for influence between Jesuits and Jansenists. Voltaire evoked it in La Pucelle d'Orléans in 1752, and Jean Jacques Bel, inspired by it, anonymously published Le Nouveau Tarquin in 1732. Comedie allegorique, en trois actes (Amsterdam, Chez Jacques Desbordes, 1732).
