Rare molded, carved and gilded walnut mantel screen decorate - Lot 166
Rare molded, carved and gilded walnut mantel screen decorated with foliage, foliate crosses, flower falls and a rocaille cartouche centered on a heart; it rests on four curved legs ending in foliage in return. Stamped by Tilliard. Louis XV period. It features a fine tapestry illustrating the Fable of the Wolf and the Lamb, framed by a flowery rocaille border. H : 112 - L : 76 cm Jean-Baptiste I Tilliard (1685-1766) was one of the most important Parisian upholsterers of the mid-18th century. Born into a dynasty of carpenters in the capital, he seems to have been admitted to the master's program in the mid-1710s, and set up his workshop on rue de Cléry, in the neighborhood favored by his colleagues. Appointed ordinary carpenter to the Garde- Meuble de la Couronne in the 1730s, probably following in his father's footsteps, he actively contributed to the revival of the decorative arts and the development of the rocaille spirit. Alongside his royal commissions, he built up a rich clientele that included the Marquise de Pompadour, the Prince de Soubise, for whom he delivered numerous seats between 1751 and 1756, and the powerful farmer-general Fontaine de Cramayel. Today, some of his creations can be found in major public collections in France and abroad, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, the Musée National du Château de Versailles, the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Metropolitan Museum in New York.
