Many representations of Joan of Arc in the early 19th century were inspired by a painting in the Musée d'Orléans (France, 16th century, Joan of Arc dit Portrait des échevins, Orléans, Musée historique et archéologique de l'Orléanais). This iconography of the young heroine wearing a hat emblazoned with ostrich feathers was repeated by several artists of the period. These include portraits of the liberator of Orléans by Pierre Nicolas Beauvallet, Edme Gois and Jean-François Legendre-Heral.
