Superb marquise ring in 375 thousandths gold decorated with - Lot 202
Superb marquise ring in 375 thousandths gold decorated with the coat of arms of Brittany in polychrome surmounted by the Latin inscription ''Triplici Foedere Iuta'' and dated 1788.
French work from the late 18th century (wear).
Gross weight: 6.50 g. TDD: 52.
History: in 1788, Brittany was shaken by unrest linked to the Estates of Brittany, which were to define the province's fiscal policy for the coming years. The bourgeoisie demanded more power, which neither the aristocracy nor the clergy would accept. In a way, these events foreshadowed those of the French Revolution of 1789. The ring we present is a souvenir of the deliberations of the Parlement de Bretagne in 1788, when it was decided that the new motto of the province would be Triplici Foedere Iuta, or "the three orders will never divide".
