Henri ROUSSEAU dit LE DOUANIER ROUSSEAU (1844-1910) Baron Daumesnil, general of the Empire (1776-1832) Bronze with brown patina. Signed " H Rousseau " and numbered " 1/8 " on the back. Bears the mark and circular stamp of the founder Susse. Titled " BARON DAUMESNIL " on the front. H : 50 cm Related literature : - Henri Certigny, Le douanier Rousseau en son temps : biographie et catalog raisonné, Tokyo, Bunkazai Kenkyujyo, 1984 ; - Yann Le Pichon, Le monde du douanier Rousseau, Paris, R. Laffont, 1981, pp. 248-249. Very marked by the Franco-Prussian war in which he takes part, and, by the Commune, the naive painter Henri Rousseau known as " Le Douanier Rousseau" addresses these events several times in his work. In 1894, his painting The war receives an ambiguous reception at the Salon des Independents. Here he pays tribute to the courage of Baron Daumesnil, inspired by the statue of the general created in 1873 by Louis Rochet. The monument is exhibited in the Bois de Vincennes where the artist used to go and carve in the wood. It was in this material that the original statue was made, which was later reproduced in an edition by Susse, then in a posthumous edition by Georges Rudier.
