After a difficult beginning of career, influenced and supported by Auguste Rodin whose practitioner he became from 1884 to 1914, Jules Desbois developed a more modern and personal aesthetic language. Faithful to the traditional subjects inherited from his academic training, the sculptor takes up here one of the biblical characters celebrated by many artists of the late 19th century, Salome. Desbois brings expressiveness and sensuality to this dancing female figure thanks to the twisting of the draped body and the arms that completely uncover the naked torso.
